DO DEMOCRATS REALLY WANT TO VOTE TO IMPEACH?
IS THIS JUST A 2020 ELECTION TACTIC?
The Democrats have now expressed outrage that they have been informed by the Trump administration that they will not cooperate with ongoing hearings until there is a vote in the House of Representatives to begin a formal impeachment inquiry.
Nancy Pelosi and Democratic committee chairmen have stated that they are conducting a formal impeachment inquiry. There has not been a vote in the House to begin such an inquiry. In the past impeachment inquiries there has been such a vote.
The problem is that many of these hearings are being held in private and the democrats only release those findings that support their case. There is no ability of Republicans to subpoena witnesses or to question accusers. If there is a formal inquiry, then there is an equal status to both sides.
Some believe the Democrats do not really want to vote for impeachment, just use their committee hearings as political attacks for the 2020 election. Much like an ongoing series of show trials.
Many believe if they actually do vote to impeach, the Senate will just vote dismiss and that will be the end of it. The Democrats can then use the vote as a political weapon against Republican senators in the next election.
It is probably just as well that the Democrats continue with an impeachment push, get it over with, the Democrats have been talking impeachment even before the inauguration. If Trump gets past this impeachment and is re-elected, it is likely the Democrats will have to discontinue this strategy.

The Republicans are pretty much in a box on an impeachment vote, if they vote to remove the president from office, they can expect it will be the end of their political career as a Republican. It will also be the end of the present Republican party for decades to come.
The Republican Senate does have another option. They could very well conduct an actual trial as allowed for in the constitution. They could put on the trial of the century, calling witnesses to be under oath on national TV. There would be lots of push-backs and objections, many delays. It could easily last into the middle of 2020. Then climax with a not guilty vote.
If the Republicans would have the fortitude and wisdom to play the way the Democrats have been playing they could put on the show of the century. While it would most likely be very divisive for the country, no one else seems to care, neither the Democrats or the media..
Maybe such an extravaganza would be a fitting climax to the last 3 years of political chaos. Maybe then everyone will have had enough.
In such a trial, the so called whistle blower/leaker would need to be called, subpeonead and testify under oath, him, Shiff and a multitude of witnesses. It would be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI have been reading stories Friday morning that the whistleblower now wants to give only written testimony. This is Pelosi's strategy to keep impeachment on 24/7 t.v. till election day.
ReplyDeleteIt seems everything is about providing a show to effect public opinion. They could vote for impeachment tomorrow, they have the votes, they have been threatening for 3 years. Why dont they just do it?
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though the plan is to have closed hearings and then instantly leak selected bits of testimony that appear to damage Trump. Often taken out of context or incomplete. If it dosnt support their plan then there are no leaks.
