BUSINESS WILL ADAPT TO NEW WORKER PROBLEMS
FUTURE WILL HAVE LESS WORKERS, LESS SERVICE, HIGHER PRICES
It is a fact that there is a shortage of competent, responsible workers. Covid-19 started the shortage by taking many of the part-time senior workers out of the workforce. Prudence by companies and seniors dictated that they should not be in contact with many other people. Hopefully these people will come back, but that is far from certain. Government policy of extended liberal unemployment compensation and regular checks has exasperated the problem. That and a epidemic of irresponsible and incompetent workers will leave business no choice but to make major changes in their plans.
The good news for the responsible and competent is that they have more opportunity than ever to receive increased wages, benefits and a path to advancement. Good employees are an asset to be rewarded and encouraged.
We have seen automation being incorporated for years and it is now taking a major leap forward. Today it is not uncommon for a single farmer, working alone, to plant, cultivate and harvest crops on 1000 acres. They sometimes have some part time help at harvest time. It is truly amazing.
We have seen fast food eliminate their inside dining, condense their menu and increase their profits with less workers. Many are also shortening their hours of operation, eliminating the low volumn time slots.
Automated check out will soon be the only alternative at big stores.
Many small business's are already consolidating and eliminating non-family workers, taking only the best jobs and shunning low profit jobs. Sometimes no workers is better than workers who are not an asset.
Right now, business is tolerating, tardy, incompetentant workers, many with substance abuse problems, and a high rate of employee theft. It the future these people will likely be content on the government dole, being rewarded for their lifestyle, but jobs will not likely be in their future. They, sadly, will deny themselves the self respect and dignity of earning their own living.
These changes will result in possibly getting anyone to do work for you, less likely. Longer wait times, increased prices and possibly needing a network of friends to get things done. We can expect a growing two tiered society based on the old fashioned idea of a strong work ethic.
