CRISIS HAS REVEALED WHO THE REAL AUTHORITARIANS ARE
ABUSE OF POWER BY SOME GOVERNORS ON DISPLAY EVERYDAY
It has become evident that Americans are still willing to cooperate with government rules and regulations when they are convinced they are in the best interest of society. Also that they have a basis in fact and common sense.
Many have claimed that the best and most efficient government would be a benevolent dictator. A pure hearted leader who would always be fair and govern in the best interest of the people and protect individual rights. Human experience has proved this is an impossible dream. There have to be limits on government power or it will inevitably become a very slippery slope indeed.
The current virus crisis has revealed the limits of too much power placed in the hands of any individual, especially those with limited abilities to sort out facts and make reasoned decisions. This is why we end up with rules restricting travel, workers from working outside, allowing walking on the beach, but not laying on the beach or going into the water. Allowing the use of sail boats, but not motor boats. I could go on and on with rules that have no basis in the facts of the situation or common sense. This is what unlimited power looks like and if allowed to continue would become more oppressive and possibly even violent if there would be no checks on this power. Those with power often retaliate strongly if anyone challenges their power. So far we have seen threats with little actual retaliation.
It seems these authoritarians have one thing in common, they are mostly democratic governors, who if they had their way we would likely not be able to use fossil fuels, salt, sugar, red meat, own guns, be self-employed or unjustly have more money than you need for basic survival. This crisis is their dream, they can now dictate what they believe is the best way people should be allowed to exist.
We have heard the claim that Donald Trump is a potential authoritarian leader, who if not checked by congress would build concentration camps and restrict the rights of everyone, particularly minority races, women, LGBQ people, immigrants and democrats. This crisis has revealed just the opposite.
The Democrats have criticized Trump for not setting rules for the whole nation, He has insisted on allowing the governors decide what is best for their state. This was his opportunity to become the most powerful authoritarian president since FDR, and he refused to go there. He has deferred to the people to decide how they should co-exist with this virus. He has helped all governors, democratic and republican deal with their problems even when it involved hysterical demands of tens of thousands of ventilators and hospital beds. He has refused to impose arbitrary rules and limits on people while attempting to put out best practices for avoiding infection.
Can anyone imagine how a Democrat President in the same situation would have been pushed, by his supporters, to use this crisis to implement their dream of a socialist utopia in just a matter of months. If you doubt this would be the case, then you are not paying attention.
I am waiting to see when this pandemic ends if State legislatures take steps to reign in the power governors have wielded
